Have you ever thought that when you enjoy swing in the park which motion does it produce? Yes! that is Oscillatory motion or oscillation motion.

Today in this lesson we are going to learn what is oscillatory motion? Definition and examples of oscillatory motion and what are the types of oscillation motion?

The term 'oscillation' means a back and forth movement in a regular rhythm. In simple words, a repetitive back and forth motion of an object is called oscillation motion.

Oscillatory Motion Definition

When a body moves to and fro about a fixed point it is said to be oscillatory motion.

The word oscillatory came from a Latin word 'oecillare' which means 'to swing'. To understand oscillatory motion here are few points to consider,

  • An oscillatory motion is a motion where a body moves between two extreme positions.
  • The centre of the two positions are called as equilibrium point or the mean.
  • The total time taken to complete one oscillation is called the time period of oscillatory motion.
  • Translatory motion is also known as periodic motion when a body repeats oscillatory motion in equal intervals of time.
  • Almost all the oscillatory motions are periodic in nature but all the periodic motions couldn't be oscillatory in nature.

Types of Oscillatory Motion

Oscillatory motion is categorised in three types. The types of Oscillatory motion are,

  • Dumped Oscillatory Motion
  • Un-Dumped Oscillatory Motion
  • Forced Oscillatory Motion

Dumped Oscillatory Motion: When the internal energy of an oscillation body reduces over time.

Un-Dumped Oscillatory Motion: When the internal energy of an oscillation body remains constant.

Forced Oscillation Motion: When a force is applied on an oscillation body. For example, a force applied to oscillate the swing.

Oscillatory Motion Examples

Following are the few examples of oscillatory motion or oscillation motion.

  • Up and down motion of spring due to an object attached through spring.
  • Back and forth motion of a swing in the park is another example of oscillation motion.
  • The movement of a ball in a bowl.
  • String of the musical instruments.
  • The movement of a wind chime.
  • The motion of a pendulum Bob.
  • The movement of Earth's crust.
  • The motion of a tuning fork.
