Today we are going to start with another type of motion that is 'translatory motion' which is also called linear motion or translation motion.

In this lesson we are going to learn what is translatory motion? What are the types of translatory motion and the types of translation motion.

The word 'translatory' means 'continuing or existing only for a short time'. Now if we talk about translatory motion in simple words it can be said, when a body moves through the same distance in a given time at that time translatory motion occurs.

Translatory Motion Definition

If a body moves as a whole such that every part of the body moves through the same distance in given time, then the body is in translatory motion.

Types of Translatory Motion

Translatory motion is further sub categorised into two types and the types are as follows,

  • Rectilinear motion
  • Curvilinear motion

Rectilinear Motion: When an object moves in a straight line in a given time is called rectilinear motion.

Curvilinear Motion: When an object moves through a curved path in a given time is called curvilinear motion.

Translatory Motion Examples

These are the perfect examples of translatory motion or translation motion.
  1. When a ball is thrown on the ground, each part of the ball covers the same distance in the given time.
  2. A stone harled from a catapult is also a great example of translatory motion.
  3. A man running or walking in a constant speed.
  4. A cycle is moving on a straight road.
  5. A coin moving over a carrom board.
  6. A bus traveling on a straight road.
  7. An apple falling from a tree.
  8. A ball rolling on the ground.
  9. A boy sliding down a slope.
  10. A bullet fired from the gun.
